The British composer Michael Tippett wrote his oratorio A Child of our Time (music and libretto) in 1939–41, in response to the 1938 Kristallnacht pogrom. In the work Tippett sought to comment on the theme of individual fate under social oppression. He incorporated several well-known negro spirituals into the work, including 'Go down, Moses'.
